SUMMARY:Plena Libre
DESCRIPTION:WATCH: https://youtu.be/UrbBuI5OhdE\n  \n“A mad weave of polyrhythms that simply sizzle.” – The Boston Herald \nSpend an evening with the four-time Grammy award-winning virtuoso musicians of Plena Libre – first in an intimate and entertaining introduction to Plena and Bomba exclusively from the Teatro Esperanza archives – then\, experience Plena Libre in full regalia with selections from their recent high-octane live performance from Puerto Rico. \nPlena and Bomba are distinctive musical styles of Puerto Rico. Bandleader Gary Nuñez and his orchestra combine a hard-hitting horn section\, master hand drummers\, and lush three-part vocal harmonies into a modern blend\, mixing traditional Puerto Rican rhythms with modern Afro-Caribbean influences\, and folkloric musical roots with contemporary compositions. \nThey’ve toured the world from Morocco to California and everywhere in between\, and recorded with some of the biggest names in Latin music\, like Eddie Palmieri\, Papo Lucca\, and Nestor Torres\, reviving the once-dormant plena sound for a new generation\, electrifying audiences with a dazzling spectacle of horns\, drums\, and dance. \nJUST ADDED!\nSpecial Bonus Feature \nBodas de Sangre\nTeatro Quarantine \nStay tuned at the end of Plena Libre’s presentation for a special bonus feature by Teatro Quarantine – the first episode of Frederico Garcia Lorca’s Bodas de Sangre! \nTeatro Quarantine presents Lorca’s seminal work for the stage as you’ve never experienced it – produced virtually with actors and sets in remote locations. In the face of the current lockdown\, necessity has again become the mother of invention and innovation as every actor has become their own costume designer\, set designer\, lighting designer\, technical director\, and crew member. The result? A gathering of incredible artists to create a unique fully virtual production of Bodas de Sangre! Bilingual\, online\, and full of DUENDE! \n______________________________________________________________________________________ \nVIRTUAL LATINO ARTS FESTIVAL  \nEsperanza Arts Center presents our first Virtual Latino Arts Festival\, celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with streamed performances by Latino artists and traditions from around the world.

SUMMARY:¡Vívelo!
DESCRIPTION:iVivelo! is a journey through a wide diversity of rhythms and traditions that gave rise to the Son Jarocho genre in the Mexican State of Veracruz. \nThis unique art form began to develop during the Spanish Colonization of the region: pre-hispanic dance traditions\, sacred-profane syncretism\, indigenous instruments\, clothing\, and symbolism mixed with African influence from Spanish slaves in dance\, storytelling\, and music. \nThis all mixed together makes ¡Vívelo! – an experience for all ages and audiences to enjoy this contemporary version of Son Jarocho while still distinguishing its essence and traditional characteristics. \nWATCH HERE: https://youtu.be/wlstzjfnXQo\n______________________________________________________________________________________ \nVIRTUAL LATINO ARTS FESTIVAL  \nEsperanza Arts Center presents our first Virtual Latino Arts Festival\, celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with streamed performances by Latino artists and traditions from around the world.

SUMMARY:We Shall Not Be Moved - Opera Philadelphia
DESCRIPTION:Esperanza Arts Center Streaming Event\n\nWe Shall Not Be Moved\nOpera Philadelphia \nDaniel Bernard Roumain\, composer\nMarc Bamuthi Joseph\, librettist\nBill T. Jones\, director \nFacebook Event\nWednesday\, June 17 at 6pm \nEsperanza Arts Center presents a special streamed video presentation of EAC Arts Partner\, Opera Philadelphia’s We Shall Not Be Moved. \nOn the run after a series of tragic incidents\, five North Philly teens find refuge in an abandoned\, condemned house in West Philadelphia at the exact location that served as headquarters of the MOVE organization\, where a 1985 standoff with police infamously ended with a neighborhood destroyed and 11 people dead\, including five children. \nThis World Premiere chamber opera by Daniel Bernard Roumain\, an acclaimed composer and performer whose work defies genre\, and librettist Marc Bamuthi Joseph\, an arts activist known for spoken‐word performance\, is “ambitiously interdisciplinary\,” according to Bill T. Jones\, the celebrated director\, choreographer\, dramaturge\, and dancer. \nCombining spoken word\, contemporary movement\, video projection\, classical\, R&B and jazz singing\, and a brooding\, often joyful score filled with place\, purpose\, and possibility\, We Shall Not Be Moved is a timely exploration of past and present struggles which suggests an alternate future through the eyes of its young protagonists. \nEsperanza is honored to have played a key role in the development of this important and timely work. As part Opera Philadelphia and Art Sanctuary’s Hip H’opera afterschool program\, led by Esperanza’s Chief of Performing Arts in the Community\, Tania Ramos Oton\, Esperanza Academy students participated in workshops with the creative team throughout a span of approximately four years. Student shared their stories of family\, struggle\, neighborhood\, and future dreams. These workshops and stories inspired the music and libretto for We Shall Not Be Moved. Esperanza students also joined the composer and librettist at the Annenberg Center to perform a selection from the in-progress opera alongside student poetry\, music\, and dance. \n“Everyone has a gift; you just have to be around the right type of people who will motivate you to show that gift off to the world. I believe Hip H’opera is that program” \nNAIOMY\, GRADE 12 \nESPERANZA ACADEMY CHARTER SCHOOL \nPremiered during Opera Philadelphia’s O17 season\, this online presentation of We Shall Not be Moved is part of Digital Festival O 2020. \nThis broadcast contains some strong language and violence. \nTune in online Facebook.com/Teatro Esperanza
