SUMMARY:Sofia Viola
DESCRIPTION:Sofia Viola takes us into her home in Buenos Aires for an intimate acoustic set that highlights the strength of her voice and the brilliance and honesty of her songwriting. Embracing her guitar and her charangón\, Viola’s songs drift from tango to vibrations of the Andes\, from milonga to happy cumbia\, from rock to vallenato\, and from chamamé to blues. \n  \nShe composes songs in which she professes her unconditional love for Latin American folklore in all its dimensions; and in her solo show\, she tells micro-stories that speak of love\, ecology\, junk food\, and universal themes from her perspective. Sofia’s provocative humor leads the audience on a journey to discover the roots of Argentina through the characters and landscapes that inhabit her songs. \n  \n[vc_btn title=”SUBSCRIBE HERE” color=”inverse” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fesperanza.salsalabs.org%2Fvlaf2021|||”]

SUMMARY:Feos
DESCRIPTION:Feos \nTeatro y su Doble \nSeptember 15 \n  \nThe result is simply masterful. Both have visible physical deformities\, are alone and have lived their whole lives being stared at. Inevitably\, they realize they have something in common and that they are ‘made for each other’. Together\, they decide to go in search of the light behind the darkness\, although nothing is quite as it seems. \n  \nInspired by the story La Noche de los Feos by Mario Benedetti and with the playwright Guillermo Calderón\, Feos is the latest production by Teatro y Su Doble from Santiago\, Chile using puppets and animations as the main characters in the story. \n[vc_btn title=”SUBSCRIBE HERE” color=”inverse” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fesperanza.salsalabs.org%2Fvlaf2021|||”]

SUMMARY:We Shall Not Be Moved - Opera Philadelphia
DESCRIPTION:Esperanza Arts Center Streaming Event\n\nWe Shall Not Be Moved\nOpera Philadelphia \nDaniel Bernard Roumain\, composer\nMarc Bamuthi Joseph\, librettist\nBill T. Jones\, director \nFacebook Event\nWednesday\, June 17 at 6pm \nEsperanza Arts Center presents a special streamed video presentation of EAC Arts Partner\, Opera Philadelphia’s We Shall Not Be Moved. \nOn the run after a series of tragic incidents\, five North Philly teens find refuge in an abandoned\, condemned house in West Philadelphia at the exact location that served as headquarters of the MOVE organization\, where a 1985 standoff with police infamously ended with a neighborhood destroyed and 11 people dead\, including five children. \nThis World Premiere chamber opera by Daniel Bernard Roumain\, an acclaimed composer and performer whose work defies genre\, and librettist Marc Bamuthi Joseph\, an arts activist known for spoken‐word performance\, is “ambitiously interdisciplinary\,” according to Bill T. Jones\, the celebrated director\, choreographer\, dramaturge\, and dancer. \nCombining spoken word\, contemporary movement\, video projection\, classical\, R&B and jazz singing\, and a brooding\, often joyful score filled with place\, purpose\, and possibility\, We Shall Not Be Moved is a timely exploration of past and present struggles which suggests an alternate future through the eyes of its young protagonists. \nEsperanza is honored to have played a key role in the development of this important and timely work. As part Opera Philadelphia and Art Sanctuary’s Hip H’opera afterschool program\, led by Esperanza’s Chief of Performing Arts in the Community\, Tania Ramos Oton\, Esperanza Academy students participated in workshops with the creative team throughout a span of approximately four years. Student shared their stories of family\, struggle\, neighborhood\, and future dreams. These workshops and stories inspired the music and libretto for We Shall Not Be Moved. Esperanza students also joined the composer and librettist at the Annenberg Center to perform a selection from the in-progress opera alongside student poetry\, music\, and dance. \n“Everyone has a gift; you just have to be around the right type of people who will motivate you to show that gift off to the world. I believe Hip H’opera is that program” \nNAIOMY\, GRADE 12 \nESPERANZA ACADEMY CHARTER SCHOOL \nPremiered during Opera Philadelphia’s O17 season\, this online presentation of We Shall Not be Moved is part of Digital Festival O 2020. \nThis broadcast contains some strong language and violence. \nTune in online Facebook.com/Teatro Esperanza
