At the age of 35, Orlando Quevedo was recognized as one of Cuba’s proponents of Magical Realism. This aesthetic language—where the fantasy and the real exist within the same visual space—has always been at the heart of his work. Quevedo’s paintings portray extraordinary moments with vivid clarity.
This exhibition invites visitors into a realm where creativity knows no limits. The collection features works that range from the sensual to the sublime, including one of his personal reinterpretations of the Mona Lisa and new reflections on art history. It brings together a compelling selection of some of his most iconic pieces, along with several works being showcased for the very first time.
A dedicated section also highlights the diversity and evolution that characterize his current artistic path.
Some artworks showcase how Orlando pays homage to the masters in his paintings, as his years at the Philadelphia Museum of Art made such tributes feel like a natural progression, allowing him to engage directly with the works that shaped his artistic eye.
This exhibition also carries a special touch: O + O, Orlando’s Cigar and Art Experience. Born in the land of the habano, where fine tobacco is woven into daily life, Orlando brings with him a heritage that is deeply rooted in tradition. This legacy—rich, aromatic, and enduring—infuses his culture, his memories, and ultimately, his art.
Twenty-five years ago, Orlando became Esperanza College of Eastern University’s first art instructor, planting the seeds of creativity that continue to flourish today. This curated selection stands as a fitting tribute to his vibrant legacy at a moment when the college celebrates its 25th anniversary and reflects on the lives he touched and transformed through his mentorship.
