Ologundê
Afro-Brazilian folkloric music and dance

To kick-off Voces – spotlighting the arts and traditions of Brazil – Esperanza Arts Center presents a livestreamed celebration of Carnaval with a performance from Teatro Esperanza featuring Ologundê. A live online Q&A and conversation with Dendê Macêdo and the Ologundê ensemble will immediately follow the performance. Ologundê will lead an online workshop with area students as part of their virtual residency at Esperanza Arts Center and a full recording of the livestreamed performance and study guide will be available as VOD for free to area schools the entire season.
Ologundê ensemble celebrates the rich Afro-Brazilian culture of Salvador, Bahia through a diverse repertoire of music, dance and martial arts. Comprised of Brazilians living in the United States and Brazil, the ensemble includes former members of world-renowned music and dance troupes under the direction of master Afro-Brazilian percussionist Dendê Macêdo.

Brazilian Jazz: Bossa Nova and Samba

Esperanza Arts Center presents Philadelphia’s own Minas as part of Voces 2021 featuring livestreamed performances that spotlight the arts and culture of Brazil.
Led by Orlando and Patricia Haddad, Minas’ impact on the Philadelphia music and cultural scene has been a constant since 1984, when the couple moved from Rio de Janeiro to The City of Brotherly Love. They introduced Philadelphia audiences to Brazilian Carnaval, founded the city’s first samba drum troupe – Philasamba, and have presented educational programs introducing the music of Brazil in schools for more than half a million children.

Orchestra 2001 returns to Teatro Esperanza as part of Esperanza Arts Center’s Voces series, featuring livestreamed performances that spotlight the arts and traditions of Brazil. Chamber music by Brazilian composers will be the focus of Conexões, including the world premiere of a new work by a Brazilian composer, and music by Philadelphia-based composer Orlando Haddad. A post-performance online audience conversation and Q&A will follow the performance.

Astral Artists

Esperanza Arts Center presents a special livestreamed staged world premiere in partnership with Astral Artists featuring Brazilian Forró music, dance, and storytelling traditions, as part of Voces 2021.
Led by mezzo-sorprano, Chrystal E. Williams and Forró, accordionist, Felipe Hostins, this unique production culminates a season-long residency, with performances of original stageworks created and performed by Esperanza Academy students, Ms. Williams, and Hostins’ Forró ensemble.
Featured artists will lead virtual residencies with neighborhood schools leading up to each performance.
